Greetings Superintendents and Principals:

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.   High school seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents graduating between January 2017 and August 2017 who attend public, parochial, independent, or home-school programs are eligible for this high honor.

This year, Dr. Carey Wright, State Superintendent of Education, will nominate up to 20 students (10 males and 10 females) for the general component of the program and up to 5 students for the CTE component.

Please find attached the informational flyer and student application to share with seniors in your district/school.  You will see that this year's student application has been designed to allow student applicants to enter their responses directly into the application form.    If you have any questions regarding the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program please contact Dr. Marla Davis (mdavis@mdek12.org) or Mrs. Dana Bullard (dbullard@mdek12.org) in the Office of Secondary Education.

Thank you for sharing this information and providing the opportunity for your students to be recognized on a national level for their academic achievements.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Kim S. Benton

Varsity Tutors: Great Resource

SEE ATTACHED FLYER!

I wanted to share a powerful new academic resource with you called Varsity Learning Tools. It is a comprehensive suite of completely free practice tests, digital flashcards, and questions-of-the-day for standardized tests and academic subjects of all levels: http://www.varsitytutors.com/practice-tests

Our Learning Tools are completely free and there is no need to create an account to use them.  Additionally, I am able, from this, our most inclusive link, to separate specific tests and subjects that would be of most use to your students and send specific links that target the particular area that students would like to study.   For example, if your students take the ACT, and you wanted to direct them specifically to that info, I would send you this link: https://www.varsitytutors.com/free-act-resources.   I can do this for any of the resources you see on the main link above.

The Varsity Learning Tools platform also includes free web-based classroom assessment software that instructors may find useful: http://www.varsitytutors.com/classroom-assessment

ASVAB: https://www.varsitytutors.com/asvab-practice-tests

Varsity Learning Tools provides more than 100,000 individual problems and thousands of practice tests across 150 subjects. This includes subjects like foreign languages, history, math, and science at all levels of sophistication. We also have thousands of practice tests and problems for Common Core and standardized tests like the ACT, SAT, AP Subjects, Math Resources and much more.

To date, students have completed more than 40 million problems on the Varsity Learning Tools platform. Each question is tied to a specific academic concept, which means that students can pinpoint their particular strengths and weaknesses in almost any area. For on-the-go studying, we also have over 40 mobile apps that students can download for free, with no account setup required. See more on our mobile apps here: http://www.varsitytutors.com/apps

We also offer free prep books for both the ACT and SAT - http://www.varsitytutors.com/books

$1000 monthly scholarship is found here: http://www.varsitytutors.com/college-scholarship
