Greetings to you amidst this busy college application season! I am the Dean of the Honors College at The University of Southern Mississippi, and I am writing in hopes that you will encourage high-ability students who have been admitted to Southern Miss to consider applying to our Honors College.

The Honors College is made up of 450 curious, engaged students who strive to deepen their education and develop as citizens and scholars. We offer an innovative curriculum, academic and social support, a living-learning community for first-year students, and experiences that take learning out of the classroom and into the world. Additionally, and importantly, all students admitted to the Honors College as freshmen will receive our Honors Scholar Award, which provides $2,000 per year (for four years) and is stackable with other scholarships on campus.* Students with ACT scores of 30 or above are also eligible to compete for our highly prestigious Presidential and Discovery Scholarships.**

Students in the Honors College gain important credentials that make them desirable candidates for jobs, internships, or graduate and professional school. But the Honors experience is about more than credentials. First-year students tell us that the Honors College eased their transition into university life by providing peer and faculty mentoring, close contact with their Honors faculty and staff, and a ready-made community both in the dorm and in the classroom. We help our scholars find their paths - each one unique, each one individual - and support and challenge them along their way.

While a typical applicant for the Honors College has a minimum 27 ACT and 3.5 core GPA, our application review process is holistic and emphasizes a great deal more than numbers. Indeed, the application is available to students with ACT scores of 24 or above. Our primary focus is to identify students who are passionate about learning, intellectually curious, ambitious, and dedicated. As a counselor, you know who such students might be, and we hope you will send them our way.

The Honors College application is due on January 15. Please encourage your students to apply by logging into the Golden Opportunities System (GO System) and getting started. If you or your students have questions about the Honors College or our application process, please write honors@usm.edu. We'll be glad to assist!

I look forward to reading your students' Honors College applications. In the meantime, I wish you a happy holiday season!

WIth warm regards,
Ellen Weinauer, Ph.D., Dean

Applications open for 2019 Lieutenant Governor's Page Program
Hello Randy,

Each year during the legislative session, the Mississippi Senate offers young people the opportunity to spend a week working at the Mississippi State Capitol as a page.  Members of the Senate, as well as the Lieutenant Governor, choose Senate pages.

The 2019 Legislative Session begins January 8th and continues until early April. There are a limited number of Lieutenant Governor's page positions available for the 2019 Regular Session.  During the week, pages report for duty by 1 p.m. on Monday, and then 8:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. Their day ends between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day, except for Friday, when they are released between 10 a.m. and noon.

During their weeklong tenure at the Senate, pages have the opportunity to see firsthand the legislative process at work. A page's busy day includes floor duty, running errands, delivering time-sensitive paperwork and carrying constituent messages to members. Pages also take part in educational field trips to nearby venues such as the Old Capitol Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Manship House and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum.

Pages must have reached their 14th birthday and not yet graduated from high school. They must be outgoing, leadership oriented, academically successful and well-rounded individuals. During their page week, pages are to be properly groomed and appropriately attired. Housing, meals and transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the pages and their families.

Before being selected as a Lieutenant Governor's page, young men and women must first complete and submit an application packet for Page Appointment.

Applications will be reviewed, and successful applicants will be notified by mail of their appointment week in December 2018.

Students should personally complete their application form and their narrative with references for submission.

Students wishing to receive an application should contact Mariah Bridgforth in my office by email at mbridgforth@senate.ms.gov or phone 601-359-3200.

Please forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested in the Senate Page Program.

Thank you for your support,

There are a number of websites out there that help you to find scholarships for free. Two of my favorites are Fast Web and College Greenlight. These sites allow you to create a profile to find scholarships that you are eligible for based on where you live, your GPA, your age, your background, etc

You can hover over Fast Web or College Greenlight and it will pull up the link to go directly to their website.

Hello,

I wanted to pass on the information about a camp we are holding at EMCC this summer.  I realize that in many cases, we are right at the end of school---in others, we have missed the last day.  But I am asking you to pass on this information to anyone you feel might be interested.

We are doing a camp at EMCC for 6th through 8th graders (or students who have completed 5th-7th).

The camp is Tuesday, June 19th through Thursday, June 21st, from 8 a.m. to 12:15.  It will be held on the Scooba campus.

There will be classes in science, technology, fitness, art---AND, we will have a Cub College Choir (which I will be directing).

I appreciate any help you give in helping to pass the word!
Lorrie

Sorry for the late notice, but I just received it.  MPC will be giving out 10 scholarships to minority.  It will not pay at MCC because of the scholarship available already to Lauderdale County students, but will pay to Scooba, EMCC, Gulf Coast CC etc.  The problem this year is the deadline to apply is Friday.  This was just approved so the timeline is short this year.  We will also be giving this out again next year.  I understand Scooba and Gulf Coast has lineman courses in place already and MPC will give graduates priority in hiring that receive this scholarship.  ECCC is in the process of adding a lineman degree.

Great opportunity for your Seniors.

Thanks,
Melia

I am looking for 2-3people interested in working 25-35 hours per week (Mon-Fri) hours would vary. This person has to be a student.  This would be testing, visualizing and washing rubber goods used in the electric distribution and maintenance of power grids.  This position requires a person to be able to do repeated task daily with  a high level of accuracy.  The person will have task that will have deadlines that will have to completed.  Mississippi Power Company goes thru an agency, Sirius for this type of labor.  The person would be paid thru Sirius but would report to Mississippi Power Company for work.  Mississippi Power Company is a drug free work place and the person would have a drug screen and background check done before employment done thru Sirius.   I am ok with the perspective employee to coming to MPC ppe testing lab to better understand the tasks required, they would need to contact me to arrange a time.

Thank You,
