NEW YORK LIFE AWARD

My name is Dina Abdulhadi, and I work with the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a national organization recognizing the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation's youth, and providing opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated.

I am writing to encourage youth in your programs to apply for our New York Life Award, which provides six students whose works explore personal grief, loss, and bereavement with $1,000 scholarships. Because you are in Mississippi, students in your state are also eligible for a special state-level scholarship of $500. All students in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate.

For Mississippi: writing submissions and visual art submissions are due on December 12. You can visit our deadlines and guidelines page for information on when and how students can submit their work. I hope that you can share the information below with students, educators, and other organizations in Mississippi Department of Education's network to spread local awareness about this scholarship.

Here are four easy ways you can share this scholarship opportunity with your students:

  1. Mention the New York Life Award in your newsletters to students, educators, and mental health professionals using this story.

Are you a creative teen in grades 7–12 who has experienced personal loss? New York Life Award provides six students whose works explore personal grief, loss, and bereavement with $1,000 scholarships. Additional state scholarships of $500 are available to two students from each of the following states: Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, and New Mexico. All students in grades 712 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate. Deadlines are approaching quickly. Visit artandwriting.org/newyorklife to find out your local deadline and how to apply.

2. Share the Award on social media.

We've written Twitter and Facebook posts that you can quickly share to your networks to increase awareness of the scholarship. Share Twitter post | Share Facebook post

3. Print and post this flyer about the Award in your school or organization.

4. Forward this email to your colleagues that engage with youth experiencing grief and bereavement.

I encourage you to visit artandwriting.org/newyorklife to learn more about the application process. Works by previous award recipients can be seen in our Online GalleriesPlease reach out if I can answer any questions about our program, and I look forward to seeing work from your students.

Best,
