Good morning

The College of Education at Mississippi State University is proud to offer the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program (METP) Scholarship. This innovative scholarship is designed to recruit and prepare teacher candidates for the future of tomorrow's education profession.  By Changing Tomorrow Through Education Today, the METP provides participants insight into world-class collaborative teaching pedagogy.

Qualified high school applicants must have a 28 or above on their ACT or a score of 1310 or above on the SAT and a 3.5 overall GPA.  Participating scholars receive an award covering full tuition, books, room and board, and incidental expenses for four years of attendance along with a one-time technology stipend.  Participants gain exposure from faculty and fellow METP scholars at both Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi during a cross-campus visit and a summer residency.  Scholars have an opportunity to experience a study abroad or an off-campus learning experience and the added opportunity of attending a national or regional professional conference relevant to their teaching discipline. Upon graduation, scholars must teach in a Mississippi public school for five years.

On Monday, November 20th we will be hosting the annual METP Scholars Day on campus.  Please share this registration link https://goo.gl/forms/ug1Cx5MDCZMVBVJk1 with high school seniors interested in attending the METP Scholars Day.  Please encourage students to register for this event by Friday, November 10th.

To apply for the award, applicants must first be admitted to Mississippi State University http://apply.msstate.edu/, and complete the METP application in the scholarship platform by the priority deadline of December 1st.

Greetings Superintendents, Curriculum Coordinators, Special Education Directors, Federal Program Directors, Principals, and High School Guidance Counselors:

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.  In 1979, the Program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.  In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education (CTE) fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. The Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people.   High school seniors who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents graduating between January 2018 and June 2018 who attend public, parochial, independent, or home-school programs with the aforementioned qualities are eligible for this honor.

All Presidential Scholars are awarded the Presidential Honors Medallion and honored for their accomplishments during the National Recognition Program in 2018 in Washington, D.C.  To learn more about the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, please visit http://www.ed.gov/psp

This year, Dr. Carey Wright, State Superintendent of Education, will nominate up to 20 students (10 males and 10 females) for the general component of the program and up to five students for the CTE component. The nomination application is attached and should be mailed to Dr. Marla Davis (mdavis@mdek12.org) in the Office of Secondary Education at P.O. Box 771, Jackson, MS 39205 and post-marked by Friday, November 3, 2017.  An informational flyer is also attached for you to share with parents and students.

Students who are selected to be nominated by Dr. Wright to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program will receive additional information via mail directly from the Presidential Scholars Program in January 2018.

Thanks,

Nathan
