Subject: Mississippi Educators 2017 National High School Essay Contest: Essays due March 15

Dear fellow Mississippi Educators:

We did not receive a single essay submission from a student in your state in 2016.  Please do not let that happen again.   For next year's contest the American Foreign Service Association is partnering with the United States Institute of Peace. This email will describe

•             Who can participate?

•             How should students write the essay?

•             What will the winners receive?

•             How will students benefit?

•             How else can our Association benefit your classroom?

Please note that your students' essays are due March 15, 2017.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Your high school students in grades 9 through 12 whose parents are not members of the Foreign Service are encouraged to participate in the contest.

HOW SHOULD STUDENTS WRITE THE ESSAY?

When writing the essay,

The essay must provide recommendations to the ambassador about the crisis involving refugees and internally displaced persons in that country. Students write the essays in a memo format.

WHAT WILL THE WINNERS RECEIVE?

The grand-prize winner will receive

•             A $2,500 cash prize

•             An all-expense paid two-day trip to Washington, D.C., to meet the Secretary of State and tour the United States Institute of Peace

•             A full scholarship for a Semester at Sea upon the student's enrollment at an accredited university

The runner-up will receive

•             A $1,250 cash prize

•             A full scholarship to the International Diplomacy Program of the National Student Leadership Conference, held annually in Washington, D.C., and New York

HOW WILL STUDENTS BENEFIT?

Participation in the essay contest will benefit your students. It will broaden your students' worldview by introducing them to the idea that conflict can be dealt with peacefully. In today's interconnected world, students can make a difference by thinking like global citizens.

HOW ELSE CAN OUR ASSOCIATION BENEFIT YOUR CLASSROOM?

The American Foreign Service Association is a fantastic resource for your classroom. We are the professional association and labor union of the United States Foreign Service. Our teaching tools include the following:

•             Our book, Inside a U.S. Embassy, is the essential guide to a Foreign Service career. Especially helpful for students, it brings the practice of diplomacy to life through the voices of more than 75 members of the Foreign Service describing their lives and work.

•             Our flagship publication, The Foreign Service Journal, covers diplomacy and development from an insider's perspective.

•             Our nationwide Speakers' Bureau comprises retired members of the Foreign Service, who would be glad to help connect you with a speaker for your school.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this email about the 2017 National High School Essay Contest. We hope you are as excited about it as we are. You can find out more about the contest, the essay topic, and the American Foreign Service Association at our website, www.afsa.org. Don't forget that your students' essays are due March 15, 2017.

If you would like contest materials or you have any questions, please contact me by email at green@afsa.org .
